When I was a kid, I used to demand to see the dolphin show at the zoo.
I’d like to pretend I was nice and asked politely but let’s face it, that doesn’t seem realistic.
I loved to see the dolphins leap into the air and dive back into the water. Even as a kid I thought diving was amazing. And dolphins were the ultimate rush. So I made a deep, heartfelt decision.
I would be a dolphin trainer when I grew up.
My mom was a good mom, so at the end of the show she waited patiently to introduce me to the trainer. She inquired what I’d have to do and learn to become a dolphin trainer one day.
The trainer detailed some things and then stated that, of course, she’d finished 4 years of college with a marine biology major.
“Oh. Nevermind,” said 5 year old me. “I’ll find another job. I don’t want to go to college.”

YES!!! I love 5 year old you. Almost as much as not 5 year old you.
Your mom was far more patient than I ever am.
LOL!!!! At 5 you knew you decided you weren't going to college. At 5 I was trying to exert my self-determination as well. I wanted to do something profound and against the grain like wear my Wednesday panties on Monday cause they were cuter, LOL.
Oh this has me laughing. Five year olds are so brutally honest, love it.
I think many a dolphin show has inspired short-lived careers in children.
In the fourth grade my parents took us to Florida. Hands down, Sea World was my FAVORITE. I wanted to live there.

Briefly I wanted to be an astronaut.
But, I'm not cut out for military life.
Do you know what time those people get UP?
Awesome. I felt the same way when I found out that to be an astronomer you had to be really good at math. No thank you.
HAHAHA! Probably one of your mom's finest 'mom' moments.
Ah, the short-lived career of the 5 year old dolphin trainer-to-be! Ranks right up there with astronaut (most likely involves a lot of math), firefighter (exercise?), and veterinarian (HOW MUCH college??).
I think you were funny way back when….if only you could have had a blog!
hah! 5 year old you had the right idea.
Yep. Smart from the get go. LOL.
I love that your mom actually asked, and that 5 year old you didn't want to go to college!
When I was five I wanted to be a maid and an angel (true story, check out my “All about me” project from kindergarten). Neither of which requires college, but one requires death, and I'm pretty sure I didn't realize that at five.
How great of your mom to ask. Bet she was glad to know the potential you saw in yourself. ; )
I really enjoyed reading this! I wanted to be a marine biologist when I was younger. Then my parents encouraged me to be a writer. Boy, were they ever wrong!
You were honest! Gotta love it!
LOL! Oh… it takes effort? *nevermind*
Well I guess I can breathe a sigh of relief that my 5 year old wants to be an ear piercing girl because that requires minimal training.
I was interviewed for a paper when I was 10. I said I wanted to be an astronomer. I even got books out of the library on it. Unfortunately, I think discovered an important truth about being an astronomer: I had to actually be able to do math.
NEXT!
That's so funny that you were so easily swayed from your dream!
LOL!! You got me with that one – I so wasn't expecting that at the end
!!
Swati
You forgot the line where your mom says: but sweetie, college is full of sex, drugs and parties!
And you totally high five her… oh wait, you were five not fifteen.
Ha Ha Ha. I actually went to school with a girl who became a trainer at Sea World in Orlando. Looks fun and all, but those freaking animals are HUGE and that water is really deep. All that would get to me.
Haaa!! I love the five year old you. Brilliant and wickedly willful! My favorite.
Hahaha! Your 5 year old brain was way smart!
When I was a kid I had a friend whose dad was a marine biologist. That sounded like the most exotic profession to me!
